Talent Announced for Dayton Miracles & Magic

Rave reviews from the 2007 show in Dayton with comedy-juggler Matt Jergens had the requests flying in to bring him back again in 2008, but his schedule didn't permit. However, we have just secured the Ohio comedy juggler again for the September 12th, 2009 show at Centerville Performing Arts Center.

Matt Jergens will be making his 5th appearance in a Miracles & Magic production (2002, 2003, 2005 in Columbus and 2007 - Dayton) which besides the host, Jon Petz, is the most seasoned Miracles & Magic entertainer.

About Matt Jergens:

Matt Jergens has been making audiences laugh for over fifteen years. Whether he's performing at corporate banquets, festivals, schools, or on five-star cruise lines, he has enjoyed tremendous success with his amazing show.

His show involves electrifying routines that showcase the talents of one of the top jugglers in the United States. He fills the stage with a multitude of unique props like pins, rings, spinning plates, cigar boxes, and yes, even rat traps! He doesn't forget the most important part of the show either, the audience. There are many opportunities for volunteers to come up and help out with a trick or stunt. Then, once they are successful, Matt sends them back to their seats looking like the stars of the show.

Thank you Matt for coming back to Dayton in 2009!

The 2009 Reviews are in....Where do I begin?

"WOW" Would be my first word. It just goes to show that even in this struggling time in terms of the economy people believe in what we are seeking to accomplish; "to allow incredible kids the opportunity to forget about shots, treatments and hospital beds and instead be able to be lost in the amazement and wonder of the magic and simply learn to be a kid again."

For the first time, we had over 500 children with life threatening illnesses and their immediate family members join us for the 1pm matinee (SOLD OUT) performance. It has been my goal to be able to continue to support more children and I feel great that we've been able to do so.

The opening party at our new venue, Martini Park, was a huge success with over 400 people in attendance along with mind blowing entertainment, special effects and surprises that had people literally jumping out of their seats. Special thanks to magicians Aaron DeLong, Brandon Williams, David McCreary and Steve Branham. Along with other special entertainers Mark Abbati of Joy Unspeakable and one of the top flair bartenders in our country; Rob Turek.

Saturday's family matinee performances showcased the amazing Dana Daniels (Los Angeles, CA) and Tim Hill (Cleveland, OH) with which I was honored to share the stage. It began with an illusion never before seen....the surprise and magic appearance of mini van center stage which was filled with 21 kids who then came streaming out one by one.

Tim Hill was filling the shoes of Kerry Pollock who was meeting up with his son returning from his tours in Iraq. Tim did a sensational job and got the show started with some great laughs and magic. Dana and his psychic parrot Luigi then brought the house down with their comedic charm and talent. I brought back some illusions from the past as well as brought my wife Stacey back into the show with help from our newest assistant and dancer Maggie Derr who all were fantastic. Of course we ended with the 'SNOW' illusion which has become customary for this production running 8 years strong.

I don't yet know the final numbers in terms of gross and net dollars raised but have great expectations based on the turn-out on both Friday and Saturday.

Special thanks to all of advisory board and committee members that this production now includes. It simply couldn't be done without them. What began as my wife and me selling tickets from our kitchen now involves over a 40 person committee of dedicated and passionate people who also want to help some amazing kids be just that...A Kid Again.

Thank you all for your support and patronage. Stay tuned to this page for information for the Dayton event in September 2009 along with the inaugural event in Cincinnati in 2010 and back in Columbus in March 2010.

Thank you and hope to see you soon!

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
With help from a young friend, Jon Petz dazzles an audience.

With help from a young friend, Jon Petz dazzles an audience.

Take some magic and a dash of comedy, mix them together and -- presto -- a rabbit is pulled from a hat to help sick children.

"Miracles & Magic" will be staged for a seventh time, with an opening-night party Friday at Martini Park at Easton Town Center and two matinee shows Saturday at the Riffe Center's Capitol Theatre. The Friday party will feature food and drink along with close-up illusions. Saturday's 90-minute shows will be family-friendly and filled with magic.

The events will benefit A Kid Again (formerly Adventures for Wish Kids), which offers activities for children with life-threatening illnesses.

" 'Miracles & Magic' is not your typical fundraiser," said Miranda Zink, director of development for A Kid Again.

Jon Petz, 36, a comic and magician from Columbus who describes himself as a "motivational entertainer," came up with the idea after performing at a holiday party for the organization.

"Man, it grips you," Petz said. "It gets you just to realize what people have to go through."

"Jon Petz actually came to our staff and said he wanted to do something for these children, really get involved and give back to the community," Zink said, "and it sort of developed from there."

"I went to Jeffrey Damron (chief executive officer of A Kid Again)," Petz said. "I said, 'Let's do a show. Maybe the kids can forget about the shots, forget about the hospital and the treatments, even if it's just for a few hours, laugh and experience the wonderment of magic.' "

The first show took place in 2002 at Dublin Scioto High School, followed by two more at that location.

"Once we moved to Downtown, it's now internationally recognized in the magic community," Petz said. "People are calling me, saying, 'Hey, can I be in the show?' That's fabulous."

One of last year's magicians, Ed Alonzo, is part of Britney Spears' "Circus" tour.

For the Saturday shows, Dana Daniels, named "Stage Magician of the Year" at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, will headline, along with comic and magician Kerry Pollock of Las Vegas.

Petz, who has been performing magic since he was 7, will perform, produce and act as master of ceremonies.

"These are the acts you see at Las Vegas variety shows. They're the best of the best from around the world," Petz said. "We do some of the big, crazy stuff you only see in a Broadway or Vegas theater."

At past "Miracles & Magic" shows, illusionists have made audience members disappear, a Lamborghini appear, and -- the crowd-favorite closer -- snow fall inside the theater.

The magicians incorporate comedy in their acts, Petz said, by joking with the audience and having them assist with tricks onstage.

"(Comedy) plays a very large role in this show," he said. "There are a lot of magicians in the world, but sometimes there are few that are entertaining and can really engage an audience. When we can get people laughing and having a good time, and we get people up onstage to take part in the magic, people absolutely go nuts for it."
